Danville City Council members voted last night to enforce a stricter curfew for local youth aged 17 and younger. Several citizens spoke up at the meeting voicing their concerns of the elevated crime that has occurred in Danville over the last month and are worried that it is only the beginning with summer months approaching.
The new curfew will be enforced starting May 19 and will be good through September 4th of this year. The new law states that kids 17 and younger must be home or under the care of a parent or guardian by 9pm Sundays through Thursdays and by 10 pm Fridays and Saturdays.
The curfew comes with a few exceptions including the attendance of an organized event or public entertainment as long as the minor goes straight home; also if the youth is accompanied by his or her parents or legal guardian; or if they are legally employed and traveling to or from work.
The council is set on informing the community through brochures, radio ads, and news paper articles to let everyone know the specifics. Several members of the council voiced their concern that while they support the stricter curfew, they are not convinced that it is the answer.
Alderman Sharon McMahon said that, “we can’t fix this – the parents really need to step up.” Alderman RJ Davis added, “What about the parents? When are we going to talk about ‘whose child is this?’” Alderman Lloyd Randle stated that social economics are part of the problem because “minorities are lacking opportunity in our community.” “If a curfew is set by the city,” Alderman Brenda Brown stated, “see that you and your children respect it. We have to start here to help make it better. Work with us. Give us a chance. We are only 14 people and need your help.”
The new curfew enforcement passed with a 14-0 vote.
