As National Small Business Week comes to a close, some local small businesses are being recognized for their success. The Illinois Small Business Development Center at Danville Area Community College has announced what it calls the ‘2017 Small Business Stars’.
They include:
- Sonny’s Corner Café & Pizzeria in Sidell. Chuck and Julie Sergeant used her restaurant experience and his business experience to transform the former Brick Street Café.
- Frozie’s Fat Calf Frozen Yogurt in the 3300 block of North Vermilion in Danville. Customers can top their choice of frozen yogurt with any of more than 30 toppings.
- Russell Leigh & Associates provides accounting services to individuals, businesses, not-for-profits, school districts and governmental bodies.
- The Milford Family Restaurant has been operated by Jesse and Janet Cintora. Tragically, last November, Jesse answered a call from police that the restaurant’s burglar alarm was going off. Jesse arrived before the police, encountered the burglars, and was fatally shot. Janet’s brother, Rigo, has since moved to Milford from Virginia and helps run the restaurant.
- Danville Omni Kolor is receiving the Illinois Small Business Development Center at Danville Area Community College Torch Award. It recognizes a business that has successfully passed the torch to a new owner. Founder Roger Siebert founded the business in 1988. The new owner is Joey White.
- Mad Goat Coffee in the 2600 block of North Vermilion in Danville. The business roasts its own coffees – depending on the season.
- Shovelhead Salloon at 12 S. College in Danville was opened by Lia and Morris Trosper in January of 2016. The business, which features bands from across the country and regional performers during ‘Open Mic Night’, is located in a former warehouse.
- Lifted Up Balloon Designs Party Store and Café Express opened in August of 2016 with the help of the Illinois Small Business Development Center at DACC. The business features both balloons and food for special events.
- Learn and Lead Academy was opened by April Jones. She is a former teacher’s aide, classroom teacher and director of a preschool in the Hoopeston area who decided to open her own business.
