A petition by the owners of the Days Hotel on Gilbert Street to vacate the alleyways on the north and south sides of the building will be amended due to opposition from the VFW post located to the south of the building.
Trupti Brahmbhatt, the owner of the hotel, says the petition was submitted to the city due to the fact that a new restaurant is set to open at the hotel soon. She says that the hotel assumed both alleys were part of its parking lot until a few months ago when a survey of the land was done. She says she believes that the entire area should have been part of the property when the hotel was originally built.
VFW representative Bill Wallpe, however, said that members of the post would lose access to the parking lot on the north side of their building if the alley next to the hotel was vacated. He says many customers access the parking lot from Pine Street due to the way the lot is striped. He said he is not opposed to having the west half of the alley be hotel property, but only wants to keep the eastern half intact.
Logan Cronk, the city’s Grants and Planning Manager, said the hotel owners could change the proposal before it is voted on by the full city council.
Members of the city’s Public Works Committee voted for the proposal to vacate the alleys on the north and south sides of the Days Hotel, with the understanding that the proposed vacation would be would be worked out between the hotel and the VFW.
