Vermilion County Board member Jerry Hawker says he is disappointed that his proposed resolution supporting local businesses impacted by the pandemic was pulled from last night’s agenda…
{Audio: ‘’I was very disappointed in the County Board tonight for not letting it get to the floor, and for them to stand up. Either they were pro-business or they weren’t pro-business,’’ said Hawker. ‘’This way I feel we have members hiding behind the shield. And that might be straight talk, but that’s the way I am.’’}
County Board Chairman Larry Baughn explained why it was removed from the full board’s agenda…
{Audio: ‘’Last night (at the) Executive and Legislation meeting – it was brought to their attention, and they postponed it indefinitely this evening. So that’s why we went to strike it from the Board. We, by all means, support all of our local businesses,’’ said Baughn during an interview with VermilionCountyFirst.com News. ‘’And we’ll talk to Board member Hawker and see if we can come up with a more fitting resolution that fits all of us. And, we can get back here hopefully next month.}
Some members of the Executive Committee complained they had not been given an opportunity to review it. But Hawker disagreed.
Former Vermilion County Democratic Party chairwoman Germaine Light urged board members to oppose Hawker’s resolution if it resurfaces at a future meeting. She argued it would be illegal to pass a resolution that goes against what Illinois law mandates. ‘’We all want relief,’’ said another citizen during last night’s public comments segment of the meeting. ‘’But we still don’t know what’s around the corner,’’ she added.
