The arctic chill which has settled into our region is expected to get even colder this weekend. The National Weather Service says there is an arctic air mass entrenched over the central United States.
Some light snow is expected at times through Saturday night. Daytime high temperatures are forecast to be around 20 or slightly above each day through Friday. But wind-chill values will be around zero to ten above each of those days. By Friday night the low temperatures are expected to reach two below, and Saturday night it might reach 10 below. And that is the actual temperatures – not wind-chill readings. Wind-chill readings could reach 20 to 30 below zero Friday and Saturday night.
People exposed to the extreme cold need to take precautions to protect themselves from frostbite or hypothermia. Areas that are most at risk for frostbite are uncovered skin and extremities – such as hands, feet and ears. The National Weather Service says if you suspect frostbite, move inside to a heated location and begin warming the affected areas. You should seek medical attention for severe frostbite.
Hypothermia…another cold weather threat…occurs when the body temperature falls below 96 degrees. The Weather Service says persons suffering from hypothermia should be given immediate medical attention.
Some other cold weather tips from the National Weather Service:
- Dress in layers when heading out into the cold.
- Eat nutritious food. Eat hot foods and drink warm drinks several times during the day.
- Wear a hat to help avoid losing body heat.
- If you live alone, ask a family member or neighbor to check on you. This could possibly be done through a camera on your computer.
- Make sure you have a winter survival kit in your vehicle.
