Thousands of American flags are up in Danville, continuing the tradition of the Rotary Memorial Way. Club members and others pitched-in to place the flags along miles of North Vermilion Street and at local war memorials and the Vermilion County War Museum.
Rotarian Bob Bookwalter was among those helping, and he says the project has been going for several years.
‘’I think it’s about 17 years. I didn’t get in on the first year or two but it’s something that I really look forward to,’’ says Bookwalter. ‘’It’s a real good feeling when you are walking along and people are waving and honking and you know that everybody appreciates what we’re trying to do out here. And I think it looks great when we get done.’’
Each flag is sponsored and Bookwalter says the money raised supports a number of causes supported by the Rotary Club.
‘’We help fund some scholarships, honor Sparky Songer (past President of the Vermilion County War Museum), and then we have a few of our own projects that if the money goes far enough, we’ll do everything we can to spread it around and benefit the community with Veterans and other ways.’’
Rotary Memorial Way stretches from downtown Danville to almost the northern city limits.
