The Illinois Senate is offering Governor Bruce Rauner half of what he had demanded for a property tax freeze. The Senate is backing a two year freeze on property taxes collected for schools and local governments. Governor Rauner has been pushing for at least a four year freeze as one of his budget reforms.
Danville Mayor Scott Eisenhauer says a property tax freeze without an exemption for police and fire pension payments would be detrimental to how the city funds pensions and other city services.
Senate President John Cullerton says he wants to try two years first – instead of four. Cullerton adds that if there’s a new school funding formula and budgets are balanced, maybe the freeze can be extended. The legislation on the proposed two-year property tax freeze was moved to the House Wednesday after clearing the Illinois Senate.
