School may be out for the summer but some kids in Danville are still able to start their day off with a healthy breakfast – free of charge! The Danville Pepsico (Quaker Oats) plant is teaming with the United Way of the Danville Area and other local organizations to not only supply breakfast, but also some fun activities.
On Thursday Cheryl McIntire, Executive Director of the Big Brothers – Big Sisters program in Vermilion County, was with a group of volunteers helping children at the event.
”We always love coming out to Breakfast in the Park,” says McIntire. ”It’s something that we look forward to. The kids eat and then they come over to us and we always have an activity for them to do. Today we’re making jewelry, and it’s just some that they enjoy. And we love to be a part of this program.”
McIntire says the children are invited to participate in various activities.
”We bring balls and play games with them. We bring the beads which they love the best, to make jewelry. We bring coloring books and games, and just have activities so that after they eat they can still play and do some structured activities,” added McIntire.
And McIntire says the program helps the kids stay healthy.
”During the school year they, of course, can eat breakfast at school. So this is a wonderful program that they don’t have to go without breakfast in the summertime.”
Any child can participate in the program. It runs from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 each morning – Monday through Friday – all this month at Danville’s Lincoln Park.
