Danville Area Community College’s basketball, volleyball and golf programs will be receiving upgrades to their facilities soon.
The college’s trustees on Thursday night approved a $28,000 bid from a Wisconsin firm to sand and re-paint the court at Mary Miller Gymnasium. College President Dr. Stephen Nacco says that he had been told this might be the last time the floor could be refurbished before needing to be replaced, but a recent estimate gives it three more sandings.
Mary Miller Gymnasium has not been repainted since 2008. It is generally recommended that gym floors be re-sanded every five to eight years, according to Dr. Nacco.
In addition, the college’s golf teams will soon be able to practice on a golf simulator. Dr. Nacco says that the equipment will have 15 different courses on it and will be allow DACC to remain competitive in recruiting and facilities, and also will be used to assistant in the development of student-athletes’ skills on the golf course. The low bid was a $25,000 estimate from a San Diego-based company.
Trustees also approved issuing $1.5 million in debt certificates through Catlin Bank so that the college can continue to upgrade its facilities in the long run. Vice President Tammy Betancourt says the college’s funds will be exhausted at the end of the current fiscal year. Funding bonds after that will pay for technology and instructional equipment. A public hearing will be held at the board’s next meeting on April 22nd.
