Firefighters from several departments battled a blaze this afternoon (February 12, 2018) which was threatening part of downtown Westville. The fire sent columns of smoke billowing into the air and closed Illinois route one in that area.
Firefighters succeeded in keeping the flames contained to an apartment building located behind the former Williams Home Supply, but other nearby businesses contained smoke and water damage. Nearby businesses were evacuated, including CMS Accounting and Latoz Hardware. Vic Latoz, who owns that business, talked with VermilionCountyFirst.com News on the scene saying he hoped firefighters would be able to contain the blaze. And with the help of firefighters who hauled water in from a wide area, Latoz’ hopes were granted as flames were knocked down without spreading to other businesses along that block.
The fire was located in the middle of Westville’s downtown business district along the east side of Illinois route one. Firefighters from Danville joined numerous volunteer departments that were assisting Westville units on the scene.
Westville Police Chief Dave Booe and Mayor Mike Weese said those living in the apartment were able to escape without injuries.
Traffic was being detoured around the site as firefighters continued their operations.
