American Red Cross Disaster Services are helping people in the Danville/Vermilion County area who have been affected by the flooding. A shelter was opened at the David S. Palmer Arena on Wednesday, and it has been providing food, cots and other services.

Pam Hastings and Jewel Bishop, both American Red Cross volunteers from Springfield, were helping to man the disaster center in Danville Thursday. They were accompanied by local Red Cross volunteer Scott James of Catlin.
Although several families have been displaced by flooding in the county, the volunteers reported that only four people stayed at the shelter Wednesday night. Several others stopped by for food and other Red Cross assistance.
The Red Cross said it planned to keep the Danville shelter open as long as necessary.
