Volunteers from the American Red Cross canvassed neighborhoods in Vermilion and Champaign Counties Saturday distributing clean-up kits in areas affected by flooding. The Red Cross has closed the disaster shelter that had been opened earlier in the week at the David S. Palmer Arena in Danville. A Red Cross spokesman said those who had been using the shelter had transitioned to other accommodations.
Red Cross volunteers distributed clean-up kits, snacks and bottled water in areas affected by flooding in St. Joseph and in the Morin’s addition on Danville’s west side.
On Friday night more than 90 residents stayed in the Red Cross shelter in Watseka in Iroquois county. Residents who have been affected by the flooding are still being urged to go to the shelter at the Trinity Church, located at 1658 East Walnut Street in Watseka.
If possible, residents should take any medications or medical equipment they need with them, along with clothing and personal hygiene items. Service animals are always welcome in Red Cross shelters. As soon as the water recedes and neighborhoods are safe to enter, Red Cross volunteers will also be distributing clean-up kits and other items to those who have been affected by the flooding in Iroquois County.
Remember, all Red Cross disaster services are free. They are made possible by the generosity of donors and there is never a charge for Red Cross disaster services. Anyone in need of Red Cross disaster assistance should call 844-319-6560 and press 1 for disaster assistance.
