The old Danville Township Building could soon be leveled.
Members of the Danville city council’s Public Services Committee will be voting Tuesday night to enter into an intergovernmental agreement with the township to demolish its former headquarters at the northwest corner of North and Walnut streets in downtown Danville.
Terms of the agreement include the city acquiring the vacant building, paying for asbestos abatement and then demolition of the structure.
Danville Township operations moved to a new building on Southgate Drive in Tilton in the summer of 2019, and the building has sat empty since then.
Committee members will also be hearing a report from Police Chief Chris Yates. May 18th marked one year since two new units, the Community Housing Unit and the Problem-Oriented Policing “POP” unit were introduced as a way to focus on high-crime neighborhoods. Yates says in a report to the council that there are still more ways to go with the units, but they have been active in reducing the amount of illegal drugs and firearms off of the city’s streets.
The Public Services Committee meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday and it can be viewed online through the city’s YouTube channel.
