The last group of Illinois National Guard troops who were stationed in Washington, D.C. in the aftermath of the January 6th insurrection attempt has returned home to the state.
Approximately 100 soldiers flew back to Illinois on Tuesday and landed at the Peoria International Airport.
Governor J.B. Pritzker activated approximately 500 National Guard members at the request of the Department of Defense for a mission at the U.S. Capitol building in late January. The building was damaged during the January 6th activities, when a mob of former President Donald Trump’s supporters broke into the building while Congress was voting to certify the 2020 election results.
Most of the troops already returned home, but the final group had elected to stay in Washington, D.C. until this week.
