Illinois State Police say some serious injuries were reported Wednesday in a two-vehicle crash along Interstate 74 near Saint Joseph (in Champaign County). The crash occurred shortly after 11:30 a.m.
Troopers say their preliminary investigation found that a vehicle being operated by a 22-year-old Chicago woman had stopped in the passing lane. Troopers add the vehicle was backing to use a turn-around designated for authorized vehicles only when it was struck by the second unit. The driver of the second car was a 22-year-old Georgetown woman.
Both drivers were transported to an area hospital with serious injuries, but the names of the injured women were not released. Troopers say although serious, the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. State Police add the crash closed the eastbound lanes of the interstate in that area for about an hour.
The Chicago woman was charged with improper backing and violation of the minimum speed restriction on the highway.
