Although summer is not officially here yet, it’s the first weekend of the summer season. And there are several special events taking place in our area.
One of them is a Summer Sounds concert at Temple Plaza downtown. Downtown Danville Incorporated and some participating businesses are also holding a Family Fun Night in conjunction with the concert with activities starting at 6:00 p.m. Friday (June 4, 2021).
Jeanie Cooke, Director of the Danville Area Visitors’ Bureau, is pleased to see events returning after many were cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic…
{AUDIO: ”Outdoors is a lot safer so we’re seeing almost everything coming back. Summer Sounds is coming back. Farmers’ Markets are coming back. Baseball’s back – which is, of course – big in my life,” said Cooke. ”There’s Municipal Band concerts, Arts In The Park, Balloons Over Vermilion. So, slowly but surely life is returning to a place that we can all go back and enjoy so many things that we’ve missed.”}
Arts in the Park is June 26th and 27th at Lincoln Park in Danville. Balloons Over Vermilion is July 9th and 10th at the Vermilion Regional Airport.

(Improvements continue at Danville Stadium in advance of this year’s 75th anniversary celebration.)
The Danville Dans have a home baseball game Saturday evening at 6:30 at Danville Stadium. And with the stadium celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, Cooke says some special events are planned….
{AUDIO: ”On June 20th we will be celebrating Brooklyn Dodger Day, which is the day Jackie Robinson, of course, played at Danville Stadium, along with Duke Snider and Carl Furillo, and Pee Wee Reese, and all those famous ‘Boys of Summer’. And then on the 24th of July we will be celebrating the 75th anniversary (of Danville Stadium), so we’re very excited about those events coming up.”}

And if you want to see how baseball was played in the old days, you are invited to watch the Vermilion Voles Vintage Baseball game on Saturday (June 5th, 2021). The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Kennekuk County Park.
This is also the weekend for the Catlin Strawberry Festival. There is a ‘Strawberry Short-K Color Run’ starting at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Catlin Park. The Catlin Strawberry Festival will feature food, games, vendors and – of course – strawberries starting at ten o’clock Saturday morning (June 5th).
