An Oakwood woman has received a statewide award for her involvement as a volunteer in the Reader’s Route program at Danville Area Community College. Ann Vogel retired after a 34 year career as a K-12 Special Education teacher. She says, ‘’I wanted to…give back to the community and…help those that struggle with basic reading and math. I feel everyone deserves a chance to better themselves and to become a success,’’ added Vogel.
Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White announced Vogel is one of ten statewide winners of 2021 Spotlight on Literacy Awards. Ten students were also honored for their achievement.
Vogel has been involved in the Reader’s Route program at Danville Area Community College as a volunteer for 8 years, and has tutored well over 100 students.
‘’Ann is the type of person who lives to give,’’ said Reader’s Route Literacy Coordinator Paulina Padjen. ‘’During the pandemic she invited learners to call her home so she could tutor them over the phone,’’ because she didn’t want them to get behind.
