Danville District 118 School Board members have approved a new student dress policy which is seen as less strict than the one which was in place. But board member Darlene Halloran says the policy ‘’takes a huge step backwards.’’ She says the new policy is almost the same as what the district had before the Uniform Standard of Dress was first approved.
School Board President Bill Dobbles agreed that the new policy is basically the same as before the new Uniform Standard of Dress was first approved. ‘’We do have a dress code and we will expect students to follow it and dress accordingly,’’ added Dobbles.
Under the new policy, approved by a 4 to 2 vote, students may wear blue jeans if they are free of rips and tears. Pants must be worn at the waist and must be fastened. And if a belt is worn it must be buckled.
No yoga pants, pajama pants, leather, mesh, flannel/fleece or nylon/vinyl or spandex pants or shorts are allowed.
No tank tops, halter tops, strapless tops, spaghetti straps or camisoles are allowed. No midriff may be exposed.
Dresses must not be strapless or have spaghetti straps. And dresses and shirts must be no shorter than approximately mid-thigh or 3-inches above the knee.
Any item determined by a building administrator to be too tight or revealing is not allowed.
