Some young students in Danville District 118 got to show off their skills Friday in a 1st Grade Math Challenge at Danville High School.
Teams of students from all seven of District 118 elementary schools participated in the competition.
Rena Pate, a retiring third grade teacher at South West Elementary School, started the Math Challenge seven years ago. And she notes the questions are nothing like what some people who are older had in first grade….
Aubrey Carpenter is the District 118 Math Coach. She was asked what she hopes the students get out of the competition….
Pate notes the team competition helps prepare the students for what they will need later in life…
The purpose of creating the 1st Grade Math Challenge was to address the New Illinois Learning Standards incorporating Common Core Standards.
