It looks as though there will be some formal organized opposition to the efforts to change Danville’s form of government.
A Citizens Against the Change of the City of Danville Local Form of Government Committee has been formed. It is opposed to changing to the city manager form of government.
Danville Alderman Lloyd Randle says the group feels switching to a city manager form of government will not provide fair representation. And the committee notes the 1987 Civil Rights lawsuit won a decision to change the old Commissioner Form of government to the current Mayor – Aldermanic Form in order to provide fair representation.
The newly-formed committee is also concerned about reducing the cost of doing business, according to Randle, and believes having a city manager will be more expensive.
The group is holding a public meeting to further discuss their opposition to the proposed change. The meeting will begin at 3:00 p.m. Saturday at the Laura Lee Fellowship House on East Williams Street.
The 1987 Civil Rights lawsuit was led by Albert ‘’Pete’’ Derrickson and six other plaintiffs. The other plaintiffs were Eugene ‘’Radio’’ Thompson, Roosevelt Davis, Bashir Ali, Nate Cunningham Sr., and Wence Cunningham Jr.
