Some inter-city softball games being played at Danville Stadium later this month will honor the memory and career of late Champaign Police Officer Chris Oberheim.
On Saturday, August 21st, the Danville, Champaign and Decatur Police Departments will compete for a cause in the inaugural Chris Oberheim Memorial Softball Games. Oberheim died in May after being shot while on duty.
Admission to the games is free, however donations will be accepted. All proceeds will be donated to Peacemaker Project 703, a nonprofit organization established by the Oberheim family. It supports law enforcement officers and their families through community outreach, reform and education. More information about Peacemaker Project 703 can be found on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/PeacemakerProject703/.
A handful of ladies Chris coached for traveling softball teams – including his daughter Avery – will be joining the police during the games. The family fun begins at 3:00 p.m. at Danville Stadium on Saturday, August 21st. Opening ceremonies are at 5:00 p.m. followed by the friendly competition.
There will be a huge selection of raffle and silent auction items, including beach condo packages. Fireworks will serve as the grand finale.
In addition to the grandstands, seating – with social distancing — will be available for those who bring lawn chairs.
Danville Police, and all participating police departments – along with the Oberheim family – say they deeply appreciate the many sponsors who have stepped up and contributed so much for this event.
