Vermilion County is one of two metropolitan areas in the nation with the largest percentage decline in population comparing 2010 Census figures to 2020. The Census Bureau released additional 2020 data Thursday.
The report shows Vermilion County’s 2020 population of 74,188 is down from 81,625 in 2010. It is a loss of 7,437 residents – or 9.1 percent of the county’s population. Vermilion County’s new population figure places the county in 21st position of the 102 counties when ranked by population. Champaign County’s population ranks 10th with its 205,865 residents.
The report released Thursday shows Edgar County’s population was 16,866 in the 2020 census. Iroquois County had 27,077 people who responded to the 2020 census questionnaire.
The report shows Illinois’ 2020 population was 12-million-812-thousand-508. The figure is 18,124 fewer people than what the state’s population was in 2010.
Part of the report released Thursday also focuses on housing.
The nation’s housing vacancy rate dropped to 9.7 percent in 2020, compared to 11.4 percent in 2010. But growth in housing units slowed over the last decade.
