A Danville City Council member is voicing concern about the city’s population loss. Ward One Alderman Robert Williams spoke out about it at a council meeting this week….
{‘’I’m very concerned about this. We as city officials, we should be taking a look somewhere as a committee or something to see what’s causing this decline. We can’t afford to continue in this direction.’’}
Alderman Williams is puzzled about the loss in population…
{‘’Why are we losing 9-percent of our population? Danville is a vibrant community – what’s going on?}
New figures released last week show Vermilion County lost nearly 9.1 percent of its population between 2010 and 2020. The county had 81,625 residents in 2010 but fell to 74,188 last year. Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. notes Danville is not alone when it comes to losing residents…
{‘’Alderman, what I can tell you is that 72 out of the 102 counties in Illinois lost population. So what I would say to you is that shows me there is likely an issue in the state,’’ said Mayor Williams. ‘’I know personally I’ve had several friends who have moved to Indiana because of tax reasons, and also because of some of the other concerns about the direction that the state is going.’’}
Mayor Williams added he believes Danville is now on track to become a destination community. And he thinks the city will see considerable improvement in the numbers in the future.
