Memorial Day is coming on Monday, and again this year thousands of small American Flags will be placed along North Vermilion Street for Danville’s Rotary Memorial Way. The flags are also placed at local memorials and the Vermilion County War Museum.
Volunteers from the Rotary and the community assist staff from the War Museum in getting the flags ready. It takes weeks to get the flags ready for the Rotary Memorial Way. But it is a labor of love in honor of those who have served in America’s Armed Forces. Small tags are placed on the flagpoles listing who they honor, along with their branch of service and whether they served in such conflicts as World War II, Korea, Vietnam or others. Other flags honor individuals who have not served in the military.
The flags are prepared at the Vermilion County War Museum, which benefits from the project. This year, Museum President Jim Kouzmanoff says there will be about 2,000 flags along Rotary Memorial Way.
