As we head toward the Labor Day weekend, law enforcement agencies hope it will be a safe one. Illinois State Police say they will be conducting Roadside Safety Checks in Vermilion County during the month of September. Troopers have a zero tolerance for impaired driving in Illinois.
District 10 Commander Captain Ryan Starrick says the use of Roadside Safety Checks combine a strong sense of public awareness and enforcement in order to save lives of the motoring public.
Officers working the detail will be looking for drivers who are operating their vehicle in an unsafe manner, those driving with a suspended or revoked driver’s license, and those transporting open alcoholic beverages. Key areas of enforcement will include:
- Driving Under the Influence;
- Safety Belt and Child Restraint use;
- Speeding;
- Distracted Driving; and,
- All Illinois Vehicle Code and Criminal Violations
Alcohol and drug impairment is a factor in more than 30-percent of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Illinois. Throughout the nation nearly 10,000 people die each year due to alcohol-impaired driving.
The Roadside Safety Checks occurring in Vermilion County are part of a project funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation.
