A strong storm system that swept through Vermilion County Sunday afternoon (June 10, 2018) left significant damage from one end of the county to the other. But the Vermilion County Emergency Management Agency says it received no reports of injuries.
In northern Vermilion County 5 to 6 inches of rain was reported in an area stretching from west of Rossville over to Alvin. A viaduct along route 119 at Alvin was flooded. Heavy rain also flooded streets in Danville, and strong winds blew some trees and limbs down.
Barricades were set up along a segment of East Voorhees in Danville (shown here) due to flooding. It is the same area where the City Council purchased some land just last week with plans to help alleviate flooding in that area.
In Georgetown a tree that was blown over sliced through a vacant home in the 200 block of Clark Street. Tony Ellis, a City Supervisor in Georgetown, was out cleaning drains after the storm….
In Danville, firefighters responded to McLane Midwest Distribution Company at route 136 and Lynch Road after the storm reportedly caused some damage to a section of roof.
Vermilion County EMA reported trees and some power poles were downed in the Georgetown area.
Strong winds also blew over young corn plants and it was not immediately known whether they will be able to bounce back. Some entire towns….including Georgetown, were left without power from the storm and Ameren called in extra crews to get it restored.
Although much of the wind damage was along a path at the north edge of Georgetown EMA spokesman Russell Rudd said there was no confirmation of a tornado in the area.
