Some Vermilion County teenagers are crediting Danville Area Community College’s ‘Middle College’ program with helping get their lives back on track. DACC Adult Education Director Laura Williams explains the program….
Williams says the students in the Middle College program attend classes as Danville Area Community College for a variety of reasons….
Jeffrey Goble was attending Oakwood High School and says after his grandmother passed away he no longer wanted to go to school. A guidance councilor recommended DACC’s Middle College program. Goble told Danville Area Community College trustees he is glad the program was there to help.
Another student in the Middle College program, Mackenzie Mowery, told the trustees she had been bullied at her high school. Now, she says she likes to get to classes at Danville Area Community College a half hour early. She is planning a career in the medical field.
Williams says the program has had a good success rate….
Danville Area Community College President Stephen Nacco says the students who enter the program ‘’are beyond at-risk’’ and have given-up on high school. And if they accept an opportunity to attend Middle College, ‘’it’s tough love – almost para-military’’ says Nacco….
The program began in 2009 with 22 students.
