Spectators headed to Balloons Over Vermilion on Friday, July 13th will be greeted by hundreds of American flags. They will be lining Bowman Avenue and the terminal drive according to event co-chair Jim Anderson. ‘’We want to show our appreciation for those who serve and have served our great country,’’ said Anderson. He says the flags will be placed by Patriot Guard Riders.
And the patriotic theme continues during opening ceremonies beginning at 6 o’clock that evening (Friday, July 13th) when Jim Cornelison of the Chicago Blackhawks sings the National Anthem at the Vermilion Regional Airport. ‘’You won’t want to miss this exceptional talent right here in our own backyard,’’ said event co-chair Pat O’Shaughnessy.
A Texan T-6 warbird piloted by Jay Schroeder will soar overhead immediately following the anthem. First responders and the American Legion Riders motorcycle club will lead the Parade of Pilots as they take to the field preparing for a mass ascension of over 30 hot air balloons. And after their flight, the balloonists will perform a balloon glow followed by something new – a spectacular laser light show.
Special events on Saturday, July 14th, will include a classic car show hosted by the Illiana Antique Auto Club, Sand Volleyball Tournament, and Balloon School. Balloons Over Vermilion is also going to feature live music, tethered hot air balloon rides, a Kids Zone play area and lots of food from vendors.
The Title Sponsor for Balloons Over Vermilion is the Julius W. Hegeler II Foundation. And a lot of other local sponsors are pitching in to make the event possible.
