Danville Fire Chief Don McMasters wants to get the city’s fire codes up to date. He spoke to the Danville City Council Public Services Committee about it during their Tuesday night meeting, and said he hopes it will get taken care of soon, as Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr is currently reviewing them. Chief McMasters says, nothing is in danger. But a lot of things have changed since Danville’s latest update in 2003.
AUDIO: The codes are just outdated. There have been so many things with technology and improvements in the way things are built and things are designed to prevent fires. For instance, codes about the way wiring is done in residences and in buildings, the way alarm systems work, the way sprinkler systems work.
McMasters says this would not mean that current structures would all through the city would need to be redone. But new structures would need to follow the new codes, and if a business closed and a new business took over that building, they would also have to follow the updated codes.
Meanwhile, three Danville firefighters were promoted during a special ceremony Wednesday morning. Justin Watt was promoted to Assistant Fire Chief, Brian Smith was promoted to Captain, and David Jones was promoted to Lieutenant.
