The open house and ribbon cutting for the new Vermilion County Child Advocacy Center is set for Thursday afternoon 3:30 to 4:30.
In these advocacy centers, children who are victims of violence and abuse are able to talk about it in a comfortable setting, and have that testimony admissible in court. The center’s executive director Brooke Ferber explains some of the strategies used to make it comfortable for the children.
AUDIO: Our whole center is designed for children. We’ve got aspiring pictures on the wall, super heroes on the wall, toys, books; a lot of things that are set up just for the children. We take away authority. Which means, we don’t come in there and act like we’re the boss. We wear plainer clothes, and we get down on their level and play at their level. We just try to make is as comfortable as we can for them.
The Vermilion County Child Advocacy Center is located in the Health Department Building, with an address of 200 South College Street, Suite B.
