It all begins this Friday night, Red Mask’s performance of Playing with Fire, After Frankenstein. Justin Smith recently explained to Linda Bolton on 1490 WDAN’s Newsmakers program that he’s actually a rookie when it comes to playing the lead. But yes, he’s as we say in Frankenstein productions, “the creature.” And in this take on the story, it’s a little different.
AUDIO: This is much less a horror story and more of, I don’t know if you’d call it like a parable, but it’s exploring the idea of that mad scientist. But he’s really a human being who steps too far. He creates something, and that creation causes problems. And that creation is actually a living, breathing being who has questions about himself.
But for those traditional Frankenstein fans, don’t worry, you’ll get plenty of inside references.
AUDIO: There’s moments that will shock you. Moments that I think people will recognize if you’ve seen any iteration of Frankenstein, you’re going to recognize these moments. You’re going to want to see these moments. I mean, like the creature getting up from the table.
The show will be at Red Mask, 601 North Vermilion in Danville, the next two weekends. Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30, Sunday afternoons at 2. Just call the box office at 217-442-5858. And by the way, there’s a Trunk or Treat event after this Sunday afternoon’s Halloween performance.
