This coming Saturday at 10 AM, a tradition that had to be skipped last year due to the pandemic returns for the Danville Police Department. Clothes for Kids will take place, in cooperation with Kohl’s. As Officer Josh Long told Linda Bolton on 1490 WDAN’s Newsmakers program, the kids in the program get to hang out and make friends with a police officer.
AUDIO: Through our Danville Police Charitables organzition, we reach out to all the county schools in Vermillion County. And I meet with or speak with the social workers, and try to get three kids per school that they feel would benefit most from the program.
Officer Danielle Lewellyn says this program would not work without a big assist from Danville District 118.
AUDIO: So the social workers, with our district here in District 118, are able to work closely with the kids one-on-one, numerous kids a day. And they’re able to recognize and understand their whole story and what kind of needs they may need, being clothing particularly one of them. So we know that’s going to be our quickest resource that we have available to us. to recognize the kids that are in most need at the time.
Officer Long says the great thing is, kids get to hang with a full uniformed officer, and get to know them. And it can be quite overwhelming for the officers when they see all the smiles and appreciation afterwards.
