So how is this year’s Salvation Army HOPE MARCHES ON CAMPAIGN going? East –Central Illinois Development Coordinator Melissa Wilhelm joined 1490 WDAN’s Linda Bolton on News Makers last week. She says it’s important to remember who started the Salvation Army and why, as it has now been serving Vermilion County for over 130 years.
AUDIO: It was orginally started overseas by a gentleman named William Booth. He really formed what I call and what we call a “street ministry.” He felt like people that really needed help, people that were desperate and on the streets, were not people that were going to local Sunday services in the church. He and his wife went out on the streets to serve people that were most vulnerable, the most at-risk part of the population.
And please remember, any donation you make THIS time of year, helps a lot of Salvation Army causes year ‘round.
AUDIO: In Vermilion County those funds to towards things like rent assistance and utilities assistance, and the food pantry there at the Salvation Army. Also Veterans services, which is really big there at our Danville facility as well.
Welhelm pointed out that the Salvation Army, putting it in perspective, has been serving Vermilion County since nearly 60 years before Schlarman Academy and Danville Area Community College came into existence, and five years after the Danville Public Library first came into existence.
