Danville District 118 School Board members were told last evening that the City of Danville wants to help save the now-vacant Cannon School. Senior City Planner Tyson Terhune addressed the school board and said the City is developing a request for proposals packet to send to some potential development companies.
Terhune said he went to a conference where he saw a school building that had been turned into residential use. He has also studied other former schools that have found new life in Milwaukee.
School board members are delighted the city wants to help. ‘’People in that area would love to see it revitalized,’’ said board member Lon Henderson. ‘’It’s a historic building on the Main Street Corridor, and we are very interested in saving the building,’’ added Board President Bill Dobbles.
The school was closed in January of 2016 because of severe flooding that occurred over the Christmas and New Year’s break.
But while the board wants to work with the city to try to save the building, board member Lon Henderson said he wants to make sure that if a developer is found they have the capabilities to finish what they start.
