The minimum wage is going up in Illinois. Governor JB Pritzker is promising he will sign the new $15-an-hour minimum wage law by next week. Greg Bishop has more on reaction to the passage of the bill…
The wages will go up in steps, and will not reach the $15-an-hour mark until 2025. The minimum wage would rise from $8.25 to $9.25 an hour effective January 1st.
The Illinois Retail Merchants Association says it is disappointed that a readily available compromise was not adopted on such an important matter.
State Treasurer Mike Frerichs hailed the passage of the bill calling it a ‘’great day for working families across our state.’’ Frerichs noted the Illinois minimum wage has been $8.25 an hour since 2010, and the federal minimum wage has been $7.25 an hour since 2009. It remains unchanged.
State Representative Mike Marron of Fithian had said he was hoping for more conversation about how the increase was going to affect downstate Illinois.
