Danville Police are investigating a Saturday morning shooting which has become the city’s latest homicide. Public Safety Director Larry Thomason says officers were called to the area of the 900 block of Hartshorn Street at about 1:50 a.m. on reports of shots fired.
‘’Officers were told that an individual was lying in the grass after shots were heard,’’ said Thomason. Officers found a man who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and he was transported to a Champaign area hospital. Thomason says the man was pronounced dead at about 2:50 p.m.
Director Thomason told VermilionCountyFirst.com News the victim is a 33-year-old whose last known address was in Chicago, but he was believed to have been living in Danville. The name of the victim is being withheld pending the notification of family members by the Champaign County Coroner.
According to Thomason there was a large crowd in the area at the time of the shooting and police are attempting to locate people who may be able to help in the investigation.
Anyone who has information about this incident is asked to call Danville Police, or call Vermilion County Crime Stoppers at (217) 446-TIPS. Crime Stoppers pays rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of persons wanted for serious crimes in Vermilion County.
Police are not releasing any other information at this time as the investigation continues. Hartshorn is located in the Fair Oaks Public Housing Area on Danville’s east side.
