It looks like there is more wintertime moisture on the way, and there’s been a lot of it lately. What do Vermilion County farmers think? That depends upon where they are in the county. As Farm Bureau spokesperson Tom Fricke tells us, the first of the last two winter storms was just about right. It arrived as mostly snow, and melted mostly gradually. But this past one was a different story. It arrived quickly and left quickly, causing a lot of water run-off. Then, you have a temperature range that can’t make up its mind.
AUDIO: Because most of it came as rain rather than snow so there wasn’t any place for it to go right away. So we’re still dealing with weather issues, as always. The constant higher and then lower temperatures can affect the ground frostline, to where some of it may not soak in as much as other times. But we’re still moving towards spring planting season, hoping to have the moisture level and the ground water up to snuff.
Fricke says if the precipitation coming to wrap up this week comes as mostly snow, it would be good, if it can arrive slowly and leave slowly like the first storm.
