Students at Georgetown – Ridge Farm High School got a vivid lesson today (Thursday) on how drinking and driving could have a tragic ending. The entire student body watched a demonstration on the school parking lot portraying what happens in a serious collision.
Georgetown Police, Firefighters and Ambulance personnel responded to the school where they found student victims in two vehicles. Carnegie Towing brought in real wrecked vehicles to help the scene look real…and the victims in the vehicles wore make-up resembling injuries and blood.
High School Principal Kevin Thomas explains why they conduct the demonstration….
Seventeen-year-old Gracie Liles was one of those watching the emergency personnel…
Sixteen-year-old Mackenzie Cavanaugh, a junior at Georgetown – Ridge Farm High, was another watching the demonstration play out…
One of the students who survived the mock accident wondered around the scene yelling ‘’Look what you did to my friend!’’ Georgetown Police showed how a field sobriety test would be conducted on a driver. And as a lifeless body was removed from the wreckage, some of the students who watched were seen wiping tears – even though it was only for show.
Principal Kevin Thomas hopes it was a lesson the students will long remember….
The Bismarck-Henning and Hoopeston Area School Districts are among those in our area holding similar demonstrations as Prom approaches.
