The Danville Area Community College Board of Trustees heard from Associate Professor of Technology and Informational Systems Kathy Hunter and three of her students during Thursday evening’s meeting. Hunter emphasized that even though a lot of her students come in wanting to be game designers, they soon see all the other opportunities. And the number of different computer coding languages taught in her classes allows her students to be able to adapt in the future to whatever language they are asked to work with.
AUDIO: I think that it’s probably one of the only degrees in the state, or probably anywhere, where they learn that many languages. But it does teach them how to adapt and how to learn, and not be afraid of any new language that they will come across.

(L to R) Kathy Hunter’s students Joe Sergent, Jakob Toms, and Olivia Logue take turns addressing the DACC Board of Trustees.
One of Hunter’s students, Joe Sergent, is working for Hub City Media in Rossville. He says, no doubt, the DACC program, under Hunter’s leadership, got him on the right track.
AUDIO: The adaptability thing comes up again. Just the ability to be able to read any set of code that’s out there; and immediately understand what it says, and then jump right in that environment and start working; is just immeasurably helpful.
Hunter’s student Jakob Toms from Bismarck is at Danville’s Watchfire Signs as a program designer. He finished his degree at Illinois State, but says his DACC education allowed him to get going right away at Watchfire.
AUDIO: Well I started working there right after I ended my schooling here. And so, it was my eduation here that allowed me to be successful, and then my internship, and then continuing to be successful as I continued to study at ISU. And now I’m working full time there (Watchfire). So (yes), definitely.
Olivia Logue is a graduate of Armstrong-Potomac High School. She says Kathy Hunter’s instruction at DACC had given her an amazing start.
AUDIO: But with Kathy, you know, it doesn’t matter where you come from. You can learn anything with her; because she does a great job teaching, and she teaches so much all at once, and at a good pace.
