Vermilion County farmers are still trying to get going with the planting season. They did get some work done towards the end of last week, especially with Saturday’s wind and warm temperatures being good for helping get the soil dried and ready for planting. But then, another step back with Sunday’s rain. But Tom Fricke from the Vermilion County Farm Bureau says, Sunday was not as bad as you might think. He says a good week could get things more on track.
AUDIO: Well, there was work done last week. There were guys out Saturday getting some field work done. I don’t know how much planting might have gotten done, but there was definitely field work getting done. The rain we got didn’t come heavy for the most part. There may have been isolated heavy showers to where that might help out in some cases, if they were breaking done clods and that sort of things. There’s still a chance that if the sun stays out and if the wind keeps blowing, we’ll get some field work done this week.
Fricke says we are nowhere near needing to start talking about planting a hybrid corn that matures faster. He says that wouldn’t even come up until the end of May, and hopefully a lot of planting happens between now and then.
