He owns one of the most amazing moments in motor sports history, and he was in Danville Tuesday night at a Fellowship of Christian Athletes event. Trevor Bayne was only 20 when he won the 2011 Daytona 500 with the underdog Wood Brothers team. Later that season, he developed multiple sclerosis after a tick bite. But as Fellowship of Christian Athletes regional director Dan Chappell recalls, Bayne said while he was in town that his faith helped him get through that scary illness.
AUDIO: His direct quote was that he, because of his confidence in the Lord, and what he felt like was his identity, which wasn’t in performance it was just in God’s plan for his life. This is a quote from him, “I literally found as much contentment and peace in Victory Lane as I did in the Emergency Room after I got that tick bite.” Which I found, obviously, very compelling.
Now, still waiting for another NASCAR win at the Cup level, Trevor Bayne finds himself racing for Joe Gibbs’ Xfinity team. Chappell takes a look at how the season how gone for Bayne.
AUDIO: He was second at Atlanta back in March, I think it was, or early April. He was competing for first place in Atlanta and got spun out of the last lap. He’s placed in the top five three times this year. So he’s back in a race car, on a limited schedule; and he was standby last week for Kyle Busch at Darlington. So he’s kind of found himself back racing again.
And meanwhile, Bayne and his wife have what he says is their calling, a coffee shop and roasting business in the Knoxville, Tennessee area; where they specialize in mentoring to youngsters getting into the workforce.
