All future Danville city employees may be required to live within a certain distance of the city limits. Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. notes some city unions already require employees to live no more than five miles from Danville.
A majority of the Public Services Committee members of the Danville City Council seemed to agree with that five mile limit during a residency discussion last night (Tuesday, May 28th).

Mayor Williams has outlined four options:
- A 5 mile limit outside Danville for city employees
- A 10 mile limit
- A 30 mile limit
- Or living within Vermilion County.
It is also being proposed that city employees who live outside Danville pay the city the equivalency of what the city is losing on property taxes.
Since Danville’s taxes make up about 18-percent of real estate tax bills, those city employees who live outside Danville would still pay their full tax bill to the County Treasurer’s Office….but they would also pay roughly 18-percent of that amount to the City of Danville for the right to live outside Danville.
The residency issue will be discussed further when the Public Works Committee of the City Council meets next month.
