A 34-year-old Danville man has been sentenced to eighteen years in prison after he was convicted earlier this year on drug charges. A local jury had found Dustin D. Cooper guilty in January on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance with the Intent to Deliver, a Class X Felony. Jurors also found Cooper guilty of Possession of a Controlled Substance.
Vermilion County State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy says under the Illinois Truth in Sentencing Laws, Cooper will be required to serve at least 50-percent of the sentence.
Evidence presented at the trial in July showed that agents with the Illinois Department of Corrections had stopped by Cooper’s residence in the 200 block of Oakwood Avenue in Danville to conduct a compliance check. Members of the Vermilion County Metropolitan Enforcement Group were with the Corrections officers when they discovered about 20 grams of cocaine, a digital scale and small baggies at the residence.
Michael Pawl, Chief of the Felony Division of the Vermilion County State’s Attorney’s Office, prosecuted the case.
