The Fourth of July is just around the corner, and Danville Police are beginning their special campaign to keep everyone safe today (Thurs, June 16th). Deputy Chief Terry McCord says special July 4th Traffic Enforcement will focus very strongly on the next three weekends; as the campaign runs through Tuesday, July 5th. McCord says it’s a matter of keeping impaired drivers off the roads, avoiding distracted driving, and using those seat belts.
AUDIO: Just looking for more people out; more vacations, more warmer weather. We want to keep an eye out for the motorcycles, for the bicycles, for the pedestrians. And we definitely want to refrain from the drinking and the driving.
McCord says fireworks are illegal for a reason, and if you see anyone using them illegally, especially when it is putting innocent people in danger, contact the Danville Police. Yes, they do get a lot of calls about this, so be as descriptive as you can about the situation.
AUDIO: They’re not allowed in Illinois. Unfortunately, it’s real easy to go right across the line and purchase those fireworks and bring them back. You always have to look at the totality of everything; and just be the best witness you can be in describing everything that you’re asked.
These special campaigns of extra enforcement are funded by federal traffic safety funds, and administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
