Champaign Police are reminding citizens to look their car doors and make sure valuables are kept out of sight. Champaign Police say they are investigating multiple vehicle burglaries involving unknown offenders. Police say citizens can help reduce those crimes by locking their doors, hiding valuables and remaining alert about their surroundings.
Here are some tips from Champaign Police:
- Always keep your car doors locked whether you are home or somewhere else. Remove valuables from plain sight and lock them in your trunk. When home, remove valuables from your vehicle and place them inside your locked residence.
- Do not leave vehicles running unoccupied.
- Use auto theft deterrents, such as car alarms and ‘kill-switch’ devices.
- Do not leave spare keys in your car (even if you keep doors locked.)
- Park in well-lit areas near other vehicles if possible.
- Don’t think that dark, tinted windows will hide your valuables. Thieves often use flashlights to see through the tint.
- Always be aware of your surroundings.
Although these tips were issued by Champaign Police, others in the area can use the advice to possibly keep from becoming a crime victim.
