As we approach August, there are plenty of ways to help get everyone school supplies this year. There’s the First Fridays Back-to-School Bash coming to Downtown Danville August 5th, along with the Stuff the Bus event over at Danville Mass Transit; but meanwhile the Salvation Army is busy with a couple of things. First, it’s their involvement with helping get school supplies to the children of Veterans families, as the Salvation Army’s Melissa Wilhelm explains.
AUDIO: (It) takes place in partnership with Operation Home Front every year. We’re doing that with the Dollar Tree Store in Danville through August 5th, at the Dollar Tree Store right there on Fairchild, which is a brand new store. That drive is also being held at the other Dollar Tree Store, up by the Walmart.

Then there’s the Salvation Army’s annual effort for all young students. And this year it is helped even further by a statewide 10-day tax break on school supplies, starting August 5th, that cuts the tax rate from 6.25 to 1.25 percent.
AUDIO: Which lines up with our annual drive, which is always the first weekend of every August. And that’s the Danville Walmart from Friday August 5th to Sunday August 7th; to benefit local children in Vermilion County, and of course the teachers as well.
Unlike the last few years, the Salvation Army will be on location during this special weekend at the Danville Walmart, and they could use your help.
