The time capsule discovered during the tearing down of Cannon School will be opened in a special ceremony at the Vermilion County Museum at 12 Noon on Friday, August 19th.
The time capsule from 100 years ago was found during the tear down of Cannon School.
Vermilion County Museum Director Sue Richter says the contents in school time capsules always mean a lot to residents not just history wise, but also nostalgia wise.
AUDIO: And a lot of times with the other capsules that we’ve had; we’ve had teacher’s lists and roster lists, and things of that sort, which are always good for people that are doing research in the future. And then it’s always kind of unique to see what people prized at the time that they wanted in the time capsule. You know, you never know what you’re going to find in them. Whatever meant something to them, which today if we were doing it, is not something we might consider putting in the time capsule. But it’s unique to see what they put in back then.
Richter says that following the opening on August 19th, the Vermilion County Museum will have the capsule and its contents on display for a full week, prior to the archival acquisition process.
Meanwhile, Assistant District 118 Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Yacobi says plans are still being made for those who would like commemorative bricks from Cannon School.
AUDIO: I know that Mr. Truex, our director of buildings and grounds, is organizing; obviously bricks will be saved, and we will have a procedure. We’ll be communicating that to the public at a different time too.\
For now, the property around the Cannon School site at 1202 East Main continues to be fenced in, as clean up and back fill work is taking place.
