The Danville City Council Public Services Committee has given the “okay” for the Police Department to apply for the 2022 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant. Chief Christopher Yates explains the difference it would make if it’s granted and then could take effect in the fall.
AUDIO: What that grant does is provide us with funding for supplemental patrols going towards anti-violence type of directive patrols; assisting the officers that are already working. It’ll provide us with overtime funding for officers to work in supplement to the officers we have on the street.

Danville Police Chief Christopher Yates addresses City Council Public Services Committee during Tuesday night meeting.
Also, with Wednesday, July 27th being Speed Awareness Day for numerous State Police departments, including Illinois, Chief Yates reminds everyone that police officers don’t want to ticket anyone. What they want to see is common sense. That goes for watching your speed, and everything else.
AUDIO: Try to stay off the cell phone. Don’t be texting while you’re driving. You know we put this information out not so we can give a full warning; we don’t want to give people tickets for this; we don’t want to take enforcement action. What we want people to do is comply and just be safe.
Meanwhile, last week’s full City Council meeting brought concern from a resident about the possible saving of Bresee Tower, which the city has acquired and plans to tear down. Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr says; they’re still going through the procedure, and waiting for preceding building owner Chris Collins’ next appeal.
AUDIO: Nothing new whatsoever at this point. We are still waiting regarding the Collins appeal to see where that goes. And then that will determine next steps. In the meantime we continue to be proactive in the partnership that we have with Farnsworth, so that we can be prepared for demolition when that time comes.
The next full City Council meeting will be next Tuesday, August 2nd, at 6 PM.
