The Danville City Council will be meeting Tuesday evening. And a revised agenda sent out late Sunday afternoon included one addition: the previously proposed salary adjustments for some of Danville’s elected officials.
During a full Council meeting on June 21st, the proposal was tabled for some fine-tuning. While much of the Council agreed that some higher salaries were needed to make the positions more attractive, there remained questions about just how much the increases should be.
All of the proposed changes would not take place until after next year’s municipal elections. The mayor’s salary would increase from $75,000 to $95,000, and then eventually up to $125,000 in May of 2026. The original proposal also called for the city treasurer’s salary to increase to $50,000 after next year’s election, and then up to $65,000 by 2026. In addition, Aldermen’s salaries would increase after next year’s elections from $225 monthly to $300 monthly. After the proposal designed by Vice-Mayor Bob Iverson was presented, Alderwoman Tricia Teague stated during the June 21st meeting that perhaps the mayor’s salary should increase to $95,000 but no more; and then perhaps the aldermen’s salaries should have even higher increases, since they’ve hardly been touched since Danville began its aldermanic form of government in the late 80s.
That was when Alderwoman Sharon Pickering suggested that Iverson and Teague work together on an adjusted plan. As Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr reminds us; first, the original proposal has to be brought back up, and then changes can be made.
AUDIO: Well, the ordinance will have to come back as it was originally written because it was tabled, so it must come back in the original form. However, it’s my understanding that Vice-Mayor Iverson plans to make some adjustments at the meeting that would adjust the salaries all downward a little.
The salaries adjustment ordinance is the 16th and last item on the updated agenda. Tuesday night’s Danville City Council meeting is scheduled for 6 PM.
