Anyone within this general region is welcome to sign up for the September 9th program from the Purdue Extension in Vermillion County, Indiana that simulates what it’s like to live in poverty. This Poverty Simulation Program will be 1 to 4 PM Indiana time in the Cayuga 4-H Community Building on the 9th. Extension Educator Lori Bouslog says, the idea is to put you in real situations, where major decisions must be made.
AUDIO: Participants will be assigned to families. Every person will have a role within their family, be it a parent or a child; caregiver. Then families will have the opportunity to work through a week living in poverty.
Bouslog also says, anyone from local officials to parents can learn things from this, and reach a greater understanding.
AUDIO: A local decision maker; a person who is employed by or volunteers with an agency or organization that provides services to limited resource families.
The deadline to register is this Friday the 26th. Please register with the link in the release below:
Purdue Extension Vermillion County, along with the Poverty Working group of the Vermillion Parke Health Coalition, will host the Poverty Simulation on Friday, September 9, in the 4-H Community Building in Cayuga, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.
The Poverty Simulation is an experience designed to help participants understand what it is like to live in a typical low-income family trying to make ends meet from month to month. While it is important to keep in mind that the experience is a simulation and not a game, the workshop addresses the challenges of living with limited resources and an abundance of stress. The primary objective of the simulation is to sensitize the participants to the realities that low-income individuals face in meeting basic needs.
The experience will help participants, from policy makers to local community leaders, better understand the real issues that individuals with limited resources face, the roadblocks that can be barriers to self-sufficiency and how those roadblocks manifest in behaviors and beliefs. Participants in the poverty simulation will have a better understanding and increased empathy of the realities of poverty. After the experience, participants will have the opportunity to discuss their observations and insights from the activity.
Registration deadline for the Poverty Simulation is August 26, 2022. While there is no cost to participate, pre-registration is required. The registration link for the September 9 Poverty Simulation ishttps://bit.ly/PovertySimulationVermillionCounty.
